Hey guys! Hows y'all's studying going? Super pumped about the Luke season? Today I thought I would share with you some of the things I've learned about studying for and jumping on General questions, so lets go ahead and dive in! First of all, Generals have been the main thing I jump on the last three years, and they're by far my favorite (even though I enjoy Situation questions a lot as well!). However, even recently I've been learning more about them, so I don't have everything figured out, but I do believe that the things I'll share with you could help. A few people have asked me how I can quiz over the material without memorizing it (even though I do plan on doing that this year! How's the Learn Luke Challenge treating you, BTW?), and it took me a long time, but I finally figured it out:
Reading and listening to it while to do other necessary tasks that don't require thinking (I.e. washing the dishes, cleaning, showering/doing hair and makeup etc.) is one of the ways you can get a whole lot of easy, extra study time in. 2. Reflex speed General questions, like context questions, normally require a lot of reflex jumping, as opposed to the memory, according to, and situation types, which usually have a reliable syllable count before a good pre-jump. What, when, where, who, why and how have slightly different timings. Who is the quickest pre-jump, followed by why, what, where, when and how (in my opinion). Knowing unique and seldom-used words, and where they come from are essential for reflex jumping on General questions. Which leads me to the next point; 3. Pay attention to each word and use them to deduce where the question came from and what it is. I.e. "Where will John be..." - "John" which is obviously the most unique word in our pre-jump, is what narrows down our possibilities to verses and passages where he's mentioned. "Where" lets us know to think of where he is connected to a certain place. In chapter one, there's four places (Verses 15, 17, 76, and 80). "Will" of course means that whatever is happening will take place in the future, rather than if it happened in the past, or if it was a current event. This knocks out only the last possibility (leaving us verses 15, 17, and 76). "Be" eliminates verses 17 and 76 because in those he will be going on to a certain place, rather than being something in a certain place. This leaves us verse 15, in which John "will be great in the sight of the Lord." which makes the last word of the question "great?". I know that this isn't a perfect, or probably even a very good example, but it is an important process to understand, to improve your pre-jumping abilities. Also, when listening for the words, it's good to pay attention to the inflection as well, like according to quizzers do all the time. 4. Knowing the topics of each passage and what verses they begin at Knowing this will help you when you deduce word by word as in the example above. You'll be able to pull out every possibility, and then be able to make your educated guess with a more sure and stable base, making sure that you aren't missing a passage. I'll be posting part two of what I've learned about Generals soon, with the last three points. I hope that these help you in your studying, jumping, and answering, and that it brings more fun to each of them as well! Whether or not you're part of a super competitive district or not, know that it can always be changed, but that it doesn't necasarily have to for you yourself to improve. This is something I'm having to learn. The best of study and practice to you! Keep calm and quiz on (and out)! Your fellow quizzer, Mallory

Hello!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but at least in my opinion, According To's are the most neglected type of question, and that's mainly because not everyone knows how to stay on top of the material and study for them. So I'm going to try and help you with that real quick in this post. (These steps are meant to be done in order :P But I would encourage you to experiment with different variations of this outline, adding, subtracting, mixing around, to see what works best for you!)
Of course, we want to aim high and miss by a little rather than to aim low and hit it ever time, right? So this is pretty heavy study for pretty much everyone (because it works best if you do this all in one day), but it will rock your According To world. Thanks for reading, keep calm and quiz on (and out)! Your fellow quizzer, Mallory Hey guys!
Today was my first official day to start memorizing GEPCP! So exciting! So for the occasion, I thought that I'd share with you a couple of things that came to mind, while I was learning these verses and reciting them to myself.
Hope those help your studying! Remember, when you're memorizing these verses, that ALL scripture is God-breathed, and is useful. That "All" doesn't mean some of it, it means "all". So if you're giving the excuse of "oh I don't think that I could really learn anything from this verse, it doesn't really have any huge doctrinal statements in it." just remember, that ALL scripture is God-breathed, and is useful. Really take some time and think on the verses you're learning. It'll benifit you way more than winning a quiz will. Thanks for reading, guys! Your fellow quizzer, Mallory Different Types of Questions and Their Quizzers-Part 2, According To's, Context and Situation12/10/2014 Hi everyone!
If you haven't read part one, i would encourage you do that before or right after you read this one! So, as a continuation, i will do the other three types of questions in this post; including tips for each one. ACCORDING TO QUESTIONS According to's can be as easy as general questions sometimes, if you get the whole question, or enough to finish it without question (i call this a 'sure fit'). However, when you label yourself as an 'According to quizzer' everyone immediately assumes that you can jump on those questions even before the whole reference is out, and get it right. This takes hours upon hours upon hours of work-and this isn't even coming from someone whose succeeded as an according to quizzer! Think of it this way-every single verse is a memory verse, and you CANNOT just quote it, you have to really understand it, so that you can make every single possible question out of the given verse, AND THEN go back and answer them all in the right order, and all of them correctly. If you get just one wrong, then even if you get the real question right, it is counted as an error to your score. I am continually amazed at according to quizzers, and i heartily respect them entirely. So, i don't really have a monumental something to say about these, so i'll just throw some light knowledge out there, concerning these verses.
CONTEXT QUESTIONS Context questions are pretty cool. because they are kind of like mystery questions. You never really know when to jump until you know that it's not a "Complete in essence the following;" or "From what old testament book does the following quotation come;" because you can't jump on an intro such as these. So here's just a few things to remember when jumping on these;
SITUATION QUESTIONS Situation questions and in what book and chapter questions switch off every year, because of the material we're going over-although I've heard that there is a year that both of them are used, but i'm not sure so don't quote me on this :-) Situation questions are like a whole bunch of generals packed into one question, and they're all about the same situation. Except there are different kinds of questions that they ask, like "what happened next" or "what was the reply". these are pretty simple, if you know the stories word for word. But, here's a couple things on them anyway;
Well, that's all for now, but i hope those two posts help you with the questions, and make you a better quizzer. Thanks for reading! Keep calm and quiz on (and out) -Your fellow quizzer Hello guys!
Today i'm going to be talking about the different kinds of questions that are asked in quizzing, and their quizzers, and some tips for each one. But i am going to split it up into two posts, since it will be a long one. GENERAL QUESTIONS General questions are the simple who, what, when, where, how, etc. questions that anyone can jump on and most of the time get right. At the more competitive quizzes, however, when they are jumping on just a word or two, they can become extremely difficult to answer, as you can imagine. These quizzers usually still memorize all of the material. In general questions you can give information from the section that the question only, and no more-section meaning, paragraph header. Multiples on these can be very difficult, because you pretty much just have to chose a section if you don't get a unique word in before you jump, and then there are possibly hundreds of questions that you could ask, if you actually get the right section by chance. Some tips for these questions;
QUOTE, FINISH, AND REFERENCE QUESTIONS All of the different types of memory questions are all obviously over the same eighty-six memory verses. Some of these are easier for other people than others, for example, i like just having to finish the verse, not having to give the reference as well. It's not because i'm lazy-even though i can be sometimes-it's because it's just another chance to me to get it wrong. I really don't like saying that, but it's just true. But all of them just require you to quote the verse in one way or another, and give the reference in one of the types. Pre-jumping on these question can be very tricky as well. On Quote questions, you could just get a "twenty-" and you don't know which one to do if there are two or more memory verses in twenty like in Acts 2. Finish, you have to really try to get the unique part in, or you just have to guess, or you can use some other method to get the question right. I myself have not been a memory quizzer in total, so i can't give you much information on them, or good strategies, because i don't want to give you bad information. And Reference questions are pretty much the same as Finish questions, but you really need to know the verses and their references inside, outside, upside, and downside-and you should probably throw and diagonal-side in there some how if you can :-P. Here's some things that i do know, though;
Well, i know that was fairly short, but the second part of this post will be coming up very soon, so stay tuned! Thank you for reading! Keep calm and quiz on (and out) -Your fellow quizzer |
