Hello Quizzers!
I know I may have talked about this a little bit in a prior post, but I think it deserves another. Last season, I used personal score cards for myself, and filled one out at each and every quiz meet that I went to (from small local quizzes, to the national tournament). I filled out my personal score, who we were quizzing, where the quiz was, what number quiz of the season it was, what number round it was of that quiz, what number question I got out of the round in (if I got out of the round), if we won or if we lost, the ending scores for each team, and so on. Now at the end of that season, having at least nine of those sheets of detailed information, I'm able to go back and learn from what I've done right, and wrong. But more so, I'm able to see how much I've grown through the season, and in what ways. There was one team on our region that I was petrified of, and it was always more difficult to quiz them than any other team, because I didn't think I could do well (because Quizzing is at least half mental) therefore I usually didn't do very well when we quizzed against them. But even though I didn't really make a huge change in mindset, putting all the times I quizzed them during last season (which was probably less than ten) together, and comparing them, I was getting much better in my performance, simply through experience and slowly growing confidence in my abilities. I went from either not getting any questions, or making a ton of errors, to maybe getting three correct jumps a round! Of course to this day I've never quizzed out when I'm going head to head that I can remember (and I'm pretty sure I'd remember that), but I am getting better, and I will get where I want to be if I keep my focus and motivation. One of the most motivating things for me, is seeing, and acknowledging my accomplishments, and being positive about what I've already done. If all you ever give yourself is condemnation, then you will get very discouraged, think badly about yourself, begin to have a negative mindset, and it's really just an unnecessary self-destruction to not give yourself a good measure of grace when you need it, and think positively, even when you haven't done as well as you would have liked. If that is what Quizzing is doing for you, and that alone, quit. It's not worth it. But if you can be positive, and use Quizzing to teach you skills, like figuring out how you work and learn the best, patience with progress, endurance, team spirit and sportsmanship, seeing past people's differences and being happy for other's accomplishments, learning how to motivate yourself and be productive, having a good attitude about everything, forming habits, getting into the Word without fail, learning how to not get discouraged, it's simple things like this that get embedded into us (even if we might not notice it at first) while we are doing something that we love, very much, that will help us a lot when we get older, and have to start thinking about the rest of our lives, and what we are going to make of them. Learning all these things at such a good age, where we are molding ourselves, and turning into who we are going to be for the rest of our lives, is a great thing, and very possibly one of the best things that quizzing will do for you, besides learning the scripture. I hope that this tidbit has helped you re-focus on things that matter, and that you see the need to think positively. And a great way to do that is to keep track of how you're doing throughout the season. So I would encourage you to get a notebook, and dedicate it only to be used at quizzes (or practices as well if you so desire) to write in how you've done, and how you've progressed. Thank you for reading, have a extraordinary day! Your fellow quizzer, Mallory
